Disclaimer – I am not Mercedes Lackey; therefore I do not own Valdemar or anything else she created. Oh, I don’t own Dragonlance either. The dragon is. I don’t own him, he just is. The girl is, too.
Alberich heard screaming from where the new trainees were supposed to be waiting for him. He ran to them, and paused in the doorway as he saw what had frightened them.
A great winged silver creature was circling the castle.
Some of the younger trainees were crying, and the older ones watched it fearfully.
Then the creature began its descent – straight towards them.
All of the trainees were frozen in fear, unable to scream or run, which is what they all wanted to do.
It landed gracefully, several paces away, and just looked at them.
Then a voice asked from the creature’s back, in a plaintive sort of way, “This isn’t Solace, is it?”
“No,” Alberich told her, slightly puzzled.
“Shoot, Levar, you’re a dragon,” a lithe teenaged girl slipped off the dragon’s back and looked up at him. Then she glared at the dragon, “you could’ve just flown there, but no you had to make up a spell on the spot and transport us there. Great work! Do you have the slightest clue to where you’ve taken us?”
The dragon tilted its head, and then it began to change.
Alberich’s jaw just about hit the floor when the dragon changed its form to the form of a young man (albeit one with long silver hair and silver eyes).
“Meryl, you’re the one that wanted to get there quickly,” the dragon sighed.
“Yes, and now we’re not there at all!”
Alberich interrupted them, “You’re in Haven, the capital city of Valdemar, and you’ve interrupted my class.”
The girl and the dragon glanced at him, having forgotten him when they had begun argueing.
Several Heralds came out at the commotion, to find Weaponsmaster/ Herald Alberich questioning two youths, who apparently weren’t paying much attention to him.
“Who are you?” he finally demanded.
“My name is Meryl Lorielian,” the girl said, and then introduced the dragon youth, “This is Levar. At least, that’s what I call him. He’s a dragon.”
“Figured that out, I have,” Alberich said dryly.
“That’s nice,” Meryl said, and then was immediately distracted. Kantor was coming from Companion’s field. “Oh, pretty.”
“That’s not a horse,” Levar stated flatly. “What is he?”
“Right you are, a horse he is not,” Alberich said, “His name is Kantor, and he is a Companion.”
“Hello Kantor,” Meryl grinned at him. “My name is Meryl Lorielian. I’ve never met a Companion before.”
: Hello, Meryl. Welcome to Valdemar. : Alberich was surprised that Kantor answered the girl.
Meryl’s grin widened, “I think I like this place, Kantor. I can go to Solace later, I suppose.” She frowned at all the trainees staring at her and Levar. “What’s got you people so jumpy? Haven’t you ever seen a dragon before?” She wondered out loud.
“No, of course we haven’t!” a youth with a blue uniform snorted, “They aren’t real.”
“Really. Didn’t you see Levar? He’s real, and he’s a dragon,” Meryl laughed.
The boy flushed.
“Anyway,” Levar interrupted before the boy could take offense, “I think I know what I did wrong, let me try again.”
“No way!” Meryl danced away from him, “Who knows where we’ll end up next time.”
Levar scowled.
“Haha, dragonboy has got a temper,” Meryl taunted, and then yawned. “Can we stay here for a while, at least until I find another way to Solace?”
“Well,” Alberich wondered if he had the authority to invite a dragon and this girl to stay at the palace. What he really wanted to do was tell them to get lost, but that might not be such a good idea, “I’m sure there’s room, for one night you may stay.”
“Yay!” the teenager did a happy dance, and gave Kantor a kiss on the nose.
“Ah…” Alberich frowned at the strange child.
